April Morse is her father’s daughter, even following him into business as a custom cabinet maker at Weber’s Cabinets. From crafting to finishing to making project quotes, she has a skilled hand in all aspects of the business — including a big deal with Williams Sonoma!
You’re a hands-on gal in a male-dominated industry. How do you balance it all?
You have to be a little bit of a tomboy and have girly charm. I have two sets of work-wear. I have to rock the grungy clothes to work in the cabinet and finish shop, where I will definitely get dirty. But then I want to look my best when I measure jobs or go to the bank.
Other than your woodworking tools, any secret weapons?
Knowledge. The more knowledge I have about how our cabinets are built, what materials we use, and even the new trends in cabinetry are what keep me better equipped to answer any question and be the best in the business.
What would you tell other ladies looking to get into this crafty line of work?
You can start to learn about how to build custom cabinetry in high school if they offer wood shop classes. That is a great start and you can continue your education in a college trade school as well.
