Take it from our Trainer-in-Chief: these patriotic and nutrient-packed foods should be at the top of your summer grocery list. Since they’re healthy, in-season, and can be found at your local farmer’s market, they’re a real steal!
Red: Raspberries, Cherries, Strawberries, Tomatoes
How to eat: Combine sliced strawberries with grilled chicken breast, crumbly blue cheese, onion slices, arugula, and a balsamic vinaigrette for a super healthy summer salad.
Or make an easy Caprese Salad, using low-fat fresh mozzarella and thick slices of tomato, seasoned with salt and extra virgin olive oil.
White: Cauliflower, Bean sprouts
How to eat: Toss bean sprouts and cauliflower into a stir fry with other veggies, like carrots, mushrooms, baby corn, and snap peas. Add a lean protein like chicken, shrimp, or tofu and you’ve got a complete meal!
Blue: Blueberries, Blackberries
How to eat: Add freshly rinsed blackberries or blueberries to low-fat Greek yogurt for a cool treat. You can sweeten it with a dash of Stevia, or add a tablespoon of nut butter to make it more filling. (This one works with raspberries and cherries too!)
